Can underlayments be installed under Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)?

Leggett & Platt’s Whisper Step® or an underlayment meeting the same specifications of density, thickness and material type may be used with Urban Surfaces’ Glue Down LVT products if desired. Please follow the manufacturer’s specifications and directions for installation. The installer/owner is responsible for making sure the underlayment is suitable for the installation.

While the option to install an underlayment is available, Urban Surfaces does not recommend doing so. Here’s why:
A Glue Down LVT Floor is only as good as its ability to stay “stuck” to the subfloor with proper adhesion. Adhesive failure leads to floor failure. With the introduction of a layer of foam, rubber or other underlayment materials, the adhesive is likely to break down before the useful life of the LVT floor would have otherwise allowed for. Simply put, adhesive directly applied between the LVT and the subfloor is a nearly bulletproof installation whereas adhesive spread between the subfloor and the underlayment and again between the LVT flooring and the foam underlayment can breakdown prematurely.

The bottom line is that LVT floors require a solid, unmoving base for successful, long lasting installations. The introduction of an underlayment compromises the base and ultimately undermines the adhesive’s grab.
